I can’t think of anything more romantic than a destination wedding in Italy! This gorgeous Mediterranean country has so much to offer — of course, the cuisine and wine are some of the world’s best, plus the historic villas, olive groves and vineyards, oceanside cliffs and beaches, and spectacular art and culture mean there’s so much to love about a wedding in Italia. Whether you’re drawn to the big cities, beachfront villages, or the bucolic countryside, here are some of the best places to get married in Italy!
Italy is one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations too, so your guests will love the idea of adding a holiday to your wedding celebrations. Your wedding photos here will be unforgettable too — imagine sharing a kiss in a golden sunflower field, saying your vows next to the sparkling Adriatic Sea, or dancing the night away with loved ones in an ancient Roman palace!
The Amalfi Coast is easily one of the most romantic Italian wedding locations! Located on the country’s Sorrentine Peninsula, this region is famous for its colourful seaside towns, perched on dramatic cliffs, turquoise beaches, and plenty of luxury resorts, restaurants, and shopping — it’s also known for its lemon groves and limoncello production!
You’ll find so many authentic and luxurious wedding venues in the Amalfi Coast, especially in the towns of Positano, Ravello, and Praino. No matter which venue you select, an Amalfi Coast wedding is going to be drenched in sunshine, vibrant in colour, and full of delicious seafood and wine! I love spring and early summer here too, as everything is in bloom, so the pinks, purples, and lush gardens are really popping!
A Tuscany wedding is going to be so beautiful — this region is famous for its rolling hills, olive farms, and sunflowers, plus its historical importance in the arts in Renaissance cities like Florence and Siena. This region is a great choice for couples seeking an authentic Italian experience — the local wines, cheeses, or olive oils here are amazing to offer to your guests as part of your reception!
If you’re imagining a countryside wedding, Tuscany offers so many heritage farmhouses, villas, and even castles, all amazing choices for a destination wedding. Savouring red wine, dancing under the stars, and dining on a multi-course Tuscan feast — a Tuscany destination wedding is perfect for foodie couples too!
The Tuscan Archipelago, now a National Park, consists of seven sparking islands, all with a connection to ancient Roman mythology. The largest is Elba, an ideal destination wedding choice for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. There are so many stunning, crystal-clear beaches where you can say your vows (shoes optional!) and the Hotel Hermitage is a beautiful choice for a luxury resort wedding on the island.
Giglio is another gorgeous island within the park, a quieter alternative to Elba, as there are only three villages here — but plenty of spectacular beaches, hikes, and boating opportunities.
Florence is one of the world’s best cities for art, culture, and history! The museums and galleries here, like the Uffizi, could keep you occupied for days, but you can also discover some of the best wedding venues in Italy here!
The city and surrounding areas are home to many villas and estates, many hundreds of years old, that are ideal for elegant, private weddings — a few favourites include Castello il Palagio and Villa di Striano. Your Florence wedding photos here will be incredible — ancient stonework, twinkling fairy lights, and lush gardens will add so much energy to your images.
Sure, we all know the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but there’s so much more to this city, including mediaeval palaces, architecture, and lots of history. Located within Tuscany, Pisa is only an hour by train from Florence, so it’s a convenient alternative to some of the more well-known cities in Italy.
A Pisa wedding is going to be so magical, with plenty of grand, historic venues to consider. The Palazzo Gambacorti is a popular option, a 14th-century palace with several halls and rooms available, depending on your wedding size.
The Dolomites is one of the best wedding destinations in Italy if you’re planning a mountain celebration. They are located in northern Italy, and are one of the world’s most impressive mountain ranges, with dramatic peaks, huge cliff faces, and Alpine lakes.
In winter it’s a popular ski destination, but summer brings beautiful sunshine, ideal for hiking or boating. An adventure elopement would be perfect here too, with plenty of relaxed mountain lodges or luxury resorts to choose from.
Cinque Torri is one of the most famous rock formations here and an easy hike, ideal for a sunrise elopement in the mountains!
As your Dolomites wedding photographer, I also need to mention the light here — wow! The golden light on the mountains just hits differently here, so we’ll be able to capture such spectacular images of your Dolomites wedding here.
If you’re drawn to the Dolomites but prefer a waterfront wedding, consider Braies Lake. A sparkling blue lago, or lake, this is easily one of the most picturesque Italian wedding venues.
Imagine the most beautiful shade of blue, the craggy mountains reflecting in the still water below — we can hire a rowboat and go out on the water for the most incredible couples’ portraits!
You could exchange vows on the lakefront, or there are B&Bs and resorts nearby, offering such a fun and authentic destination wedding.
If you’re getting married in Italy, there really couldn’t be a more iconic destination than Venice. The city of canals needs no introduction and truly is a dream for your wedding images.
With romantic gondola rides, ancient bridges, and some of Italy’s most famous architecture, like St Mark’s Basilica, we’ll have so many options to take gorgeous Venice wedding photos!
Venice is also a top choice for a luxury wedding, with so many five-star hotels and Michelin starred fine dining.
As a note, weddings in Venice, and most of the towns and cities mentioned here, can be very popular! It’s best to book your venue as far in advance as you can, and after you’ve booked, then lock in all of your vendors. If you’re overseas, a local wedding planner can be a huge help with this.
A Naples wedding is another amazing choice for foodies. It’s the birthplace of pizza, but if that’s not enough of a reason, it’s also famous for its pasta, seafood, and mozzarella cheeses. You and your guests will love exploring the Old Town of Naples, with plenty of museums, galleries, and gelato to try out! The city is also close to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, which makes for an amazing day trip.
Naples, and the surrounding region, is home to plenty of gorgeous waterfront venues along the Sorrento Coast, plus luxury hotels in the city that would be ideal for large weddings.
Cefalu is a charming coastal town in Sicily, known for its craggy rock beaches, picturesque architecture, and mediaeval history. The historic city centre and old fishing village are just beautiful. We can take some candid Cefalu wedding photos here that you’ll love, capturing the colour, energy, and atmosphere of the town.
You can also find plenty of amazing Cefalu wedding venues to choose from, whether you’re after a chic beach vibe or a luxury resort.
The town of Santa Maria di Leuca, also known as just Leuca, is in southern Puglia, in Italy’s south. A coastal region along the Adriatic Sea, the beaches here are some of the most beautiful in Italy, so definitely consider a Leuca beach wedding! Sparkling turquoise water, sea caves, and lots of available boats and yachts to charter make Puglia a popular summer destination — especially if you love seafood!
In Leuca and the surrounding Puglia region, you can find a lot of stylish beach clubs, historic villas, and upscale resorts, so plenty of options to plan the type of wedding you’re dreaming of. Your guests will love it here too, especially in late spring and summer, as they can relax on one of the gorgeous beaches, enjoy lazy alfresco lunches, or head out on a sunset boat cruise — with prosecco, of course!
There is so much amazing history and architecture here, so a Ravenna wedding is ideal for couples seeking a Northern Italy destination. Located in the Emilia-Romagna region, Ravenna is known for its West Byzantine and was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire.
With millennia of history everywhere you look, the historic areas of Ravenna are amazing for taking wedding photos with character, with ancient stone piazzas, colourful mosaics, and mediaeval footbridges, which will add such an Italian flair to your photography. You can even say your vows right in the city, with the historic Palazzo Merlato, dating back to the 13th century, available for weddings.
